Leo F. Mullin,
Executive Fellow in Executive Education, Harvard Business School

Leo Mullin is the Chairman of the Board of TransUnion, the data analytics company based in Chicago. He recently completed twelve years of service as a Senior Advisor to Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, the private equity unit of Goldman Sachs where he advised on a part time basis on acquisition, management and disposition of companies and served on boards of companies acquired by Goldman. He is a previous board member of Chubb Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Bell South, VISA International and Inland Steel.

Mr. Mullin was CEO of Delta Air Lines from 1997 through 2003. He led Delta for almost seven years during one of the most tumultuous periods in aviation history. His 1997 appointment occurred as the airlines were struggling to emerge from the economic crises of the early 1990s. Two years into his tenure, his global aviation colleagues named him Chairman of the International Air Transport Association. And, he achieved special prominence following the September 11, 2001 tragedy. With the industry on the brink of failure, he served as the airline industry’s chief legislative and public spokesperson in helping orchestrate the industry’s recovery program.

Prior to Delta, Mr. Mullin served for two years as Vice Chairman of Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, preceded by a fifteen-year career at First Chicago, the nation’s tenth largest bank, ending his time there as President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President for Strategy at Conrail during the railroad industry’s crisis-ridden 1970’s. He played a crucial role in planning and overseeing one of the most massive infrastructure rescue actions in U.S. history, involving seven failing railroads providing service to sixteen states and three Canadian provinces. Prior to Conrail, he had a nine-year career, the last three as a partner, with McKinsey & Company.

His civic and business involvements have included Chairmanships of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF, the nation’s largest nongovernmental funder of diabetes research) and the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago; Vice Chairman of the Chicago Urban League; and memberships on the Northwestern University Board of Trustees, the President’s Export Council, The Business Council and The Business Roundtable.

Mr. Mullin grew up in Massachusetts as one of eight children. He has three degrees from Harvard University—an undergraduate degree in engineering and applied physics, a master’s degree in applied mathematics and a master’s degree in business administration. He currently serves as an Executive Fellow in Executive Education at Harvard Business School. He and his wife Leah live in Atlanta and are the parents of two children.
